Twilight

This is my second pastel drawing:) I had submitted it as my Sec 3 end of year work. I chose dogs as my subject matter as I really like animals!!! Perhaps I will do a cat painting next time. I like the sky the most, in order to create this effect; I had used five different colours. Firstly, use white and yellow as the base colour. Next, colour some part of the sky using red or orange to get the feeling of sun rise. Lastly, apply black colour onto the painting. It is important to put lighter colours before darker colours!  I am quite satisfied with this piece of work. I think I like pastel.

Aftering visiting liu kang’s art exhibition helded in singapore art musum last year, I was impressed by the effect of pastel.Liu kang’s pastel works are so realistic and beautiful. It was amazing to see all the colours blend in so well with one another. Hence, I was inspired to create something using the pastel.

I chose to draw a swan and a duck as I like to use animals as my subject matter.  I didn’t success initally. It was hard to control the pastel, as a beginner, i could not blend the colours together in the way I wanted them to be. Moreover, my drawing paper turned so dirty and I could not contiune my drawing anymore. After doing some researchs on the pastel drawing techiques, I realised the reason for my drawing paper to get so dirty was because I had forgot to clean my fingers (which I had used to blend the colours) regularly  to avoid contamination of the painting with colours previously blended. Also, I shouldn’t have used the eraser to erase my mistakes! This was a lesson learnt. Overall, this was an interesting experience to me.

Although the final outcome was not as realistic as the photograph, I have learnt a lot from this try out. Most importantly, I discovered my love for pastel drawing.

This is my self portrait. The ash gray colour tone is achieved through the use of charcoals. I am quite interested in the use of charcoals and this is my first piece of work, drawn completely with charcoals. The strokes are invisible and the painting looks as realistic as a photograph. The contrast between the black and white gives a strong visual impact, evoke a strong sense of loneliness.

The subject matters of this artwork are the sun, the hand-shaped building and the small boy who is staring at the scorching sun. The composition of this artwork is balanced. The brushwork is fine and almost invisible. The colours used are two contrasting colours, black and white. The flat form and bold outlines are influenced by Gauguin. The reason for creating this artwork is to express my feeling towards life. The hand-shaped building symbolises the protection from parents. It also means that the life of a child is under the control of their parents. The scorching sun symbolises the power of the outer world which a child will need to face sooner or later. We always look forward to growing up, look forward to escapeing from our parents’ control. However, the real world is totally different from the one in a childhood dream. The sun is not as innocent as the one in the storybooks.

The subject matters of this art work are the sun, the moon and the big tree with numerous branches. The composition of this artwork is balanced. The brushwork is fine and almost invisible. The colours used are two contrasting colours, black and white. The flat forms and bold outlines are influenced by Gauguin. The branches of the tree represent the choices we have in our life while the curves represent the state of mind when we cannot make a decision. Also, the tree symbolises our life while the branches can be different roads in the life. What I want to express is the idea of ‘At first, we started at the same point. Yet, as we go further and further, some go towards the moon, some go towards the sun, some are lost on their way.’ Growing up is full of choices. The sun and the moon symbolise the two sides of the world, white and black, light and dark.

The subject matters of this art work are the rainbow, the hot air balloon and the child sitting in it. The composition of this artwork is a little unbalanced. The brushworks are fine and almost invisible. The colours used are two contrasting colours, black and white. The flat forms and bold outlines are influenced by Gauguin. The title of this artwork is ‘dream’, thus the subject matters are something that will appear only in a child’s dream. Sky is always the first association in a child’s dream. I chose the rainbow as my subject matter because I think rainbow is the best item in the world that can be used to describe dream. They are so similar, can be seen but can never be touched, so beautiful yet can never last long. What I want to express in this artwork is that you can chase after the dream; however, it is impossible to get hold of it.

The subject matters of this art work are the buildings in the city. The composition of this artwork is balanced. The brushworks are fine and almost invisible. The colours used are two contrasting colours, black and white. The flat forms and bold outlines are influenced by Gauguin. The two buildings at the right hand side of this artwork are similar to the music instruments. While the curved buildings at the left hand side of the artwork are similar to the shape of a banana. My objective is to create a crazy city. It is snowing in the background of the city, creating a sense of coldness. There is only one resident in the city, which adds onto the feeling of loneliness. What I want to express in the artwork is the idea that although in reality, city is always full of noise and people, it is also the loneliest and the most merciless place in the world. The gorgeous flats are the cages that trap everyone.
